Why measure the stem strength of crops?
For a long time, plant lodging has been an important factor restricting the high and stable yield of food crops, and the main indicators affecting plant lodging resistance include the bending, compressive strength, puncture strength, etc. of plant stems. These indicators can be measured using a stem strength tester, especially when identifying and selecting high lodging resistant varieties. The excellent quality of stems and the main period, factors, and degree of influence that affect stem strength can be measured through this instrument, providing a theoretical basis for high-yield cultivation, variety selection, and mechanized production of crops.
Taking corn as an example, when evaluating the quality of corn varieties, we usually look at the size of the corn cob and the appearance of the plant. In fact, what we need to look at is the comprehensive characteristics of corn, mainly including root system, stem, ear position, plant height, leaves, etc. Among them, stem is a particularly important factor.
